Do Toppik Hair Building Fibers Work?

Mel Cooley asks… Would the Beauty Brains recommend buying Toppik Hair Building Fibers for my slightly hair-impaired significant other?pc047 its not a bald spot

The Right Brain responds:
Well Melanie, thanks for your question. Whether or not you want to be with the kind of guy who covers up his bald spot is up to you. But we can clue you in on the technology behind Toppik.

Toppik Hair Building Fibers. Yeah, right.

The hype on this one is a bit hard to swallow. Here’s what Amazon.com says:

The best hair loss concealer on the market. Toppik fibers are restructured to merge undetectably with your hair when applied. It is a safe, natural way to eliminate the appearance of baldness and thinning hair. It’s not a spray, cream or cover-up. In fact, it’s so scientifically advanced that it is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Toppik is an amazing new complex of tiny, microfiber “hairs” that perfectly blend with your hair. Toppik fibers are made of the same organic Keratin protein as your own hair. Through a unique process, these fibers are restructured to merge undetectably with your hair. You will instantly see a fuller, more natural looking head of hair than you could ever imagine.

Surprise: Toppik really works!

Surprisingly, Toppik fibers really do work. It’s really kind of amazing how well they fill in and disguise a small balding area. And they even look pretty natural (assuming your guy can match his hair color, of course.)  Even more surprising, the fibers actually stay in place during the course of the day. The only serious negative that we observed in our Beauty Brains test on random slightly balding males, was that if they got their hair wet (or even sweated too much) the color could smear. And of course, they’d have to reapply the product every day, which gets expensive.

How does it work?

The product is a fine powder made of the following ingredients: Keratin, Ammonium Chloride, Silica, DMDM Hydantion, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate. It may also contain yellow, red blue, and orange colorants to create different shades of hair. The formula is blended with just the right mix of keratin and silica to give you small hair-like fibers that adhere to the real thing. That means it works best when there’s at least a few scalp hairs to cling to.  If you just smear this on a totally bald scalp it won’t give the same effect.

The Beauty Brains bottom line

If your man is looking for a quick cover up for a thinning spot of hair, we’d recommend trying this product.

What do YOU think? Would you rather be with a guy who is “au naturale” with his hair impairment or would you like to be with someone who fakes it? Leave a hairy comment for the rest of the Beauty Brains community.

Where Does Hair In Makeup Brushes Come From?

Carol’s quandary…I’m against fur and animal suffering, so being a makeup artist I’m very concerned about where the hair comes from for the makeup brushes; and if animals are harmed in the process?Makeup_Brush

The Right Brain’s response:
The answer to your question depends on what kind of brushes you buy. Like so many products, brushes started about being made from natural materials like animal hair. But over the years, as science has advanced, man-made alternatives were developed. Today you can buy synthetic OR animal hair brushes. If you’re interested, here’s a good place to start your search for quality non-animal Nylon bristle foundation brush.

Naturally hairy

But what about those brushes made from animal hair? Are the hairs gently plucked from the animals’ backs as they recline on a comfy sofa, quaffing tasty home-made morsels? We’re afraid not. At least in some cases, animal hair used in brushes comes from pelts, just like fur does. According to this manufacturer badger hair used in shaving brushes is collected from the animal’s pelt and not from shearing. Hair from boars (pigs) and sables are also commonly used in both makeup brushes and paint brushes.

The Beauty Brains bottom line

If you’re concerned about animal welfare, you might want to seek synthetic options. There are plenty of high quality alternatives to animal hair brushes. Shop around and you should be able to find a brush you can use in good conscience.

What’s new at Avon

The fun part about cosmetics is that every new product, no matter when it comes out is like Christmas Day. The excitement, the possibility, the joy.  OH the joy. Especially if something works. And if it doesn’t, well…. there’s always another day.

I’m checking the What’s New section at Avon and see their newest mascara SuperFULL Mascara on sale for $4.99 with their intro special .

200908141433200908141433-1
Avon’s Clean Build Brush works with anti-static formula to comb and separate as it adds volume.
Up to 5X last fullness! Flakeproof. Smudge-resistant.

Sounds cool huh. I did try their SpectraColor Lipstick, which lets you custom color your lipstick shade much like those dial out self tanners or tinted moisturizers which is not even on their Avon site anymore, but I liked and didn’t. I ended dialing one shade (the lighter) more than the darker and it seemed like a waste of $$ for a color that 1/2 of I wouldn’t even wear. But there is a  Spectra Lash Mascara.
200908141438

1 mascara, 3 looks.
Up to 8x the volume.
With the innovative spectra dial, you can customize your lashes to build volume for any occasion or mood. More volume. More options. No clumps or flakes. .28 oz. net wt.
All Avon mascaras are hypoallergenic and opthalmologist-tested.

Hmm, I remember Maybelline I think having something like this similar way way way (way) back… Again, like they say, Christmas morning, if it works.. :) Similar Posts:
